What made iTunes a revolutionary idea for many unsigned musicians is the fact that the record companies, or the middle-man, as it was formally known as before… are no longer required. Many unsigned bands now are quick to exploit this loophole while retaining all creative control which has always been a big issue with many of the artists. Selling your own music without the help of the music industry is one of the biggest modern day capital protests for creative freedom of control.
To get your music on ITunes is relatively simple all you have to do is:
- Get your account all signed up like you would any other social media platform. Then you are in after you verified the email account.
- Choose the type of release you desire to go onto iTunes: whether it is single or album.
- Upload your sound with of course cover art to put your songs on iTunes.
- Don’t forget to mention all the makers who were helping you put the songs together, as it is called, credited when songs are sold.
It all sounds good and exciting because you are now out there in the public domain, but believe it or not, it is not that simple! This is where the real hard work begins! Why do I say that? For the simple reason: your music will be sitting there for a very long time because like many thousands upon thousands of unsigned musicians, you are virtually unknown. Giving away free music, as advised by some in the industry, is an insult to your professionalism, and solid graft. No one walks into a supermarket and strolls out again with free food. But only musicians are exploited in this way, and it is criminal! To know knowledge, I have yet to come across an artist that gives away their work for free. But we the musicians do it all the time as if we have no value or respect for what we do!
As a fellow musician who have given music consultation over the years; I am so against that very idea. This principles work for the already signed and established artists who already have a name behind them. My next blog will go into this in much depth so don’t miss out…
Remember that now you have your music on iTunes you must think like a business person! You need to market it, and attract the right audience the old fashion way. Too many musicians are throwing away free music hoping to attract loyal fan base when that effort could have turned into old school marketing. That is how you get more music sold on iTunes.
